Opening of Powell Crenshaw Office Has a Celebratory Air
Hoping to influence Colin L. Powell as he decides whether to run for President, about two dozen people turned out in Los Angeles to celebrate the opening of a Citizens for Powell office in the Crenshaw District.
Armed with the standard political accouterments--T-shirts, buttons, red-white-and-blue balloons--the people who came out Thursday said the country needs the retired general in the Oval Office. “Racial tensions have never been higher, yet this is a man we can all unite behind,” said Celes King III, a prominent black Republican.
Most in the predominantly black crowd said they already are registered Republicans--or plan to register soon. There also were a few white Republicans from the San Fernando Valley.
Outside the offices on 48th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, organizers said they will focus on registering people to vote as Republicans in California’s primary.
The Crenshaw office is one of about a dozen around the nation opened to gather support for Powell and to urge him to run, according to Mel Burton, political strategist for the national Powell headquarters in Washington.
