ANAHEIM : Council to Review Design for Community Center
Design plans for the first phase of Anaheim’s ambitious downtown community center project will be reviewed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The facility, to be built on Philadelphia Street between Center Street and Broadway, will be part of the Anaheim Redevelopment Agency’s revitalization of a 60-block area of downtown.
The center design includes craftsman-style architectural elements, wood rafters, a stone fireplace and vine-covered trellises at entryways.
The center’s first phase, to be completed by June, 1997, will feature a gymnasium, a senior citizens center, a boxing club, an art gallery, meeting and activities rooms, and offices. That phase will encompass about 40,000 square feet and cost an estimated $8 million.
Federal funds will help pay for the first phase. The city is still seeking corporate and foundation grants to cover a $1.9-million shortfall.
Later phases of the community center will include facilities for the Boys and Girls Club branch, the Anaheim Family YMCA and a cultural arts center.
