A bus driver was badly beaten by two men Monday in South-Central Los Angeles after his bus struck and killed a 20-year-old man who had darted into an intersection on a motor scooter, authorities said.

Donald DeBoe, 57, of Fontana, was in critical condition with massive head injuries at County-USC Medical Center’s intensive care unit.

The man on the motor scooter, Jafar Broussard of Los Angeles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DeBoe, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority driver, was northbound on Broadway when Broussard darted in front of the bus at 42nd Place, police said.

After the bus hit the scooter, DeBoe pulled over to the curb to checked on the man’s condition.

Police said the collision appeared to have been accidental.

“Several men were walking by on the street and saw the accident,” said Sgt. Larry Delgado of the Central Traffic Division. “When they realized he was dead, they attacked the driver.”

The two men involved in the beating, who were still at large, are believed to be friends or relatives of Broussard, authorities said.

DeBoe was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital, authorities said, and lapsed in and out of consciousness Monday night.

The MTA and the United Transportation Union each put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the attackers, MTA spokeswoman Andrea Greene said.

There were a number of witnesses on the crowded bus, she said.

“We believe that someone must have seen the vicious attack,” she said. “We cannot tolerate unprovoked attacks on our bus drivers.”
