Job resumes were on their minds Wednesday when Cal State Long Beach student senators voted overwhelmingly against changing the university’s name to Long Beach State.

Debate before the 13-1 vote had focused on perceptions that the suggested name was too informal to suit future employers.

“[Senators] felt that changing the name . . . would lessen the marketability of their degree,” student body Treasurer Alvaro Castillo said.

The proposal has simmered for years. It arose this semester as a way of distinguishing the school from others in the California State University system.

At least six other campuses--including San Diego State--have dropped the Cal State label.

At any rate, a name change probably would have faced difficult challenges. Any switch would have required approval by the Legislature.
