The Los Angeles chapter of MAD DADS--Men Against Destruction Defending Against Drugs and Social Disorder--has officially been established in the Crenshaw district, making it the 42nd chapter in the United States.

“The goal is to mobilize men in the community to be positive role models and bring about a sense of safety in the community,” said Ken Riley, president of the new chapter, who is also the California state chairman.

MAD DADS members in Los Angeles are already involved in one program in which they help supervise after-school activities between 5 and 7 p.m. at Hyde Park Elementary School in Southwest Los Angeles, Riley said.

The national organization was started in 1989 in Omaha.

Riley runs the local chapter from an office at 4625 Crenshaw Blvd. He said he has signed up more than 400 men representing all races.

While the emphasis of MAD DADS is on getting men involved in their communities, Riley said that everyone, regardless of race, gender or age, is invited to join.

Meetings will be held every first and third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. For information, call (213) 290-7111.
