South Bay : SIZING UP THE PORT
As ships get bigger, so must the harbor. A public hearing concerning plans to widen and deepen the entrance to San Pedro’s West Basin will be held today during the Harbor Board of Commissioners meeting. Jeff Leung, spokesman for the Port of Los Angeles, said the idea has been in the works for some time and would improve ship access.
“Currently, some ships need to maneuver their way through the entrance to get through,” Leung said. “Widening it will make the entrance safer.”
The Port of Los Angeles has applied for a permit to widen the entrance from 530 feet to 700 feet. The procedure also includes dredging sedimentation to bring the water to a uniform depth of 45 feet.
