Alliance Forms to Rival Telecom Italia: Bell Atlantic, France Telecom and Olivetti, the money-losing Italian computer group, announced plans to join forces in the Italian telecommunications market with the aim to become the chief rival to state-controlled Telecom Italia. The alliance is a step in the alignment of forces in Europe’s liberalizing telecom market. It will provide France Telecom and its international partners, Deutsche Telekom and U.S. Sprint, with improved access to the $19-billion Italian market.
