A Parade in Miniature

With all the hustle and bustle that surrounds preparations for the Rose Parade, the little ones are likely to be left out. It’s too dangerous for them to work around the paint, glue and two-story-plus gargantuas that will roll down Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day, but the Kidspace Museum has begun its own tradition, with the Rosebud Parade. The eighth annual kid-size parade corrals 300 to 500 children 10 and younger, sending them down South Lake Avenue in Pasadena on floats, bikes, trikes and skateboards that they decorate themselves. The kids attach fresh flowers, dried leaves and seeds--the same type of material used on the Rose Parade floats--to their floats and hand-carried signs.

The Tournament of Roses Royal Court will crown the 1995 Rosebud King and Rosebud Queen after the final float-building workshop, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the museum, 390 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena.

Cinderella will be the grand marshal of the parade, departing at 1:30 p.m. down South Lake Avenue, from San Pasqual Avenue to Del Mar Boulevard and back. The Cowgirls Marching Band will also participate. Workshop is $5 per child. Spectators free. Registration: (818) 449-9144.
