San Gabriel Valley : IN THE RACE
Republican Assemblyman Bill Hoge of Pasadena surprised a field of candidates for his seat by forgoing a run at the state Senate and seeking reelection to the 44th District.
“Holding this Assembly seat is critical to maintaining a Republican majority in the Assembly,” Hoge said. “I feel a duty to run for the Assembly one more time.”
Hoge, whose district stretches from Sunland to Temple City, said Gov. Pete Wilson, Assembly Speaker Brian Setencich (R-Fresno) and Assembly majority leader Curtis Pringle (R-Garden Grove) all urged him to run again. But Hoge could also have faced Republican Assemblywoman Paula Boland in the Senate race to succeed Newton Russell (R-Pasadena).
Warren Jacob, a Republican candidate for Hoge’s seat, withdrew from the race Wednesday and endorsed the incumbent.
“I supported Bill in 1992 and 1994 and I will enthusiastically support him in 1996,” Jacob said.
