Gallegos Named Top SCIAC Player

Jill Gallegos, a senior forward on the Cal Lutheran women’s soccer team, has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year.

Other All-SCIAC selections from Cal Lutheran were freshman forward Holly Roepke, senior midfielder Lara Heifner, sophomore midfielder Kim Holeman, senior defender Emily Kanney and sophomore defender Lara Philby.

Selected to the second team were senior goalie Amy Walz, junior forwards Jill Simmer and Jennifer Tuck and senior midfielder Margaret Vestal.

Kim Taylor, 12, of Woodland Hills has been selected to the under-14 State Olympic Development girls’ soccer team. A member of L.A. Force, Taylor has scored 27 goals in 11 matches.

Basketball

Cal State Northridge is No. 262 out of 305 NCAA Division I teams in the preseason Sagarin computer rankings. Other American West Conference teams are Southern Utah (157), Cal State Sacramento (290) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (305).

Burbank High has scheduled its annual alumni game for Wednesday at 7 p.m. All former varsity players are invited.

Golf

Todd Andrews has been named as a midseason replacement for Cody Barden as Pepperdine golf coach.

Barden resigned last week to pursue private business interests. Andrews, a former player at Pepperdine, will coach the Waves in their final eight matches.

Pepperdine is ranked No. 14 in the nation by Golf Week.

Volleyball

Cal Lutheran’s Tracy Little has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year.

The junior outside hitter has a single-season school record of 308 kills and also has 366 digs.

Senior outside hitter Darcy White was named to the All-SCIAC team, and setter Liz Martinez was a second-team pick.
