Last season, Orange Lutheran needed overtime to get past San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea, 7-6, in a Division X playoff game.

On Friday at Brea Olinda High, the Lancers’ running attack, led by Che Holloway’s 113 yards and three touchdowns, propelled Orange Lutheran (8-3) to a 20-3 victory in the opening round of the Division X playoffs.

The Lancers will face the Kern Valley-Malibu Kilpatrick winner in next week’s second round.

On the second play from scrimmage Friday, Orange Lutheran quarterback Nick Odenath dashed around left end for 47 yards. The next play, Holloway took a pitch to the right side, beat Mary Star’s defense to the corner and raced 38 yards for a 7-0 lead.

The Stars’ Phillip Trutanich kicked a 40-yard field goal midway through the first quarter.

In the third quarter, Holloway capped a 65-yard Orange Lutheran drive with a one-yard plunge for a 13-3 lead.

Two plays after Holloway converted on fourth and two at the Stars’ 26-yard line with a 15-yard run, he scored on a nine-yard run to put the game out of reach, 20-3, with 7 minutes 59 seconds remaining.

Orange Lutheran’s defense held the Stars to 136 yards of total offense.
