LAX: Getting In : Park Places : Amid lots of choices, you pay for service and proximity

Even on the busiest days of the year, there’s parking for everyone who wants it somewhere near LAX. With 21,104 spaces available in its Central Terminal area and outlying lots, LAX claims to be the world’s second-largest parking lot operator, surpassed only by Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Parking fees brought in $42.2 million to LAX in the year ending June 30, 1994.

There are also private lots and hotel garages within half a mile or so of the terminals, all offering shuttle or valet transportation 24 hours a day. They vary in price, services and amenities, so it’s important to shop around. Here’s some advice:

Within the Central Terminal area there are 8,441 spaces that have not filled simultaneously in the past three years, according to LAX spokeswoman Diane Scully. Rates are $3 for the first two hours, $1 for each additional hour to a maximum of $16. For short-term parking at Central Terminal, there are metered spaces for 25 cents (quarters only) for 15 minutes, maximum two hours. (For locations, see L13.)

The Department of Airports also runs long-term parking lots B (6,000 spaces) and C (8,000). Both are patrolled by airport police, and shuttles run at 10- to 20-minute intervals day and night. (To check availability on and around busy holidays, call 310-646-5252.)

Within a 15-minute drive from LAX are several private lots. Some are as basic as the public lots. Others will wash your car, lube it and put it in a covered lot.

Major exits for LAX from the San Diego Freeway (I-405) include Manchester Avenue, Century Boulevard and Imperial Highway. Going west on the Century Freeway (I-105), take the L.A. Airport exit just past Nash Street.
