The children’s game of owning the bank has become a reality at a Torrance elementary school.

The Del Amo Savings Bank has created a pilot program that will teach children financial responsibility while improving their math skills.

The “Back to the ‘50s” banking program will let fifth-graders at Wood Elementary School turn the school library into a bank each Friday. The kids will act as tellers--with help from real bankers--accepting small deposits from the rest of the student body that will be transferred into actual bank accounts. Students will learn how to calculate interest and record deposits, said bank Vice President Enid Malm.
