Home or away, the New York Rangers were too much for the Pittsburgh Penguins to handle this week.

“This gives us a little bit of confidence,” Ranger Coach Colin Campbell said after his team’s 4-3 victory at Pittsburgh completed a home-and-home sweep. “I’m not so sure Pittsburgh was totally on their game tonight. I’ve seen them better.”

Wayne Presley scored the winning goal while the Rangers were short-handed. Goalie Mike Richter made 40 saves.

Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux, playing on consecutive nights for the first time this season, had a goal and an assist. He has at least one point in all 15 games he has played this season.

Colorado 6, Chicago 2--Valeri Kamensky scored two goals and had an assist at Denver as the Avalanche remained the only unbeaten team at home (8-0-2).

Goalie Stephane Fiset ran his personal unbeaten streak to 10-0-1.

Blackhawk defenseman Chris Chelios received a misconduct and a game misconduct for going after referee Mick McGeough at 4:02 of the final period.

Winnipeg 3, Ottawa 1--Ed Olczyk and Shane Doan scored first-period goals at Ottawa as the Jets spoiled the NHL coaching debut of Dave Allison.

The announced crowd of 8,426 at the Civic Centre was the second-smallest in team history.

Detroit 5, San Jose 2--Sergei Fedorov scored two goals at Joe Louis Arena as the Red Wings extended their winning streak to seven and moved a point ahead of Toronto atop the Central Division.

The Sharks may have lost recently acquired goalie Chris Terreri, who left in the second period because of a bruised shoulder.

Dallas 4, Vancouver 3--Mike Modano, who had missed four games because of a pulled stomach muscle, scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal with 6:20 to play at Dallas.

The Canucks are 0-6-1 in their last seven games.

Tampa Bay 3, New Jersey 1--Petr Klima scored on a breakaway late in the second period and goalie Daren Puppa made 28 saves to lead the Lightning at St. Petersburg, Fla., as the Devils lost their third consecutive game.

Hartford 4, Montreal 2--Robert Kron scored a short-handed goal and Jeff Reese stopped seven shots in relief of injured Sean Burke as the Whalers defeated the Canadiens at Hartford.

Reese took over at the start of the third period after Burke experienced back spasms.
