Following up on a complaint about a foul odor, police on Thursday discovered four pythons and a boa constrictor in a Canoga Park office building. One of the pythons was dead.

The snakes were discovered about noon in the 7800 block of Alabama Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. George Wright said.

The live animals--which ranged in length from 12 to 18 feet--were taken to an animal shelter, the officer said.

“No one knows how they got there, but we think someone who lives in the area had a problem caging them, and they might have crawled there because it was safe and out of the way,” said Wright.

The owner of the snakes could face criminal cruelty charges, the officer said.
