A SPECIAL REPORT: TOYS

TOY STORES: With 31 days to go, toy shops are bracing for their busiest season. Retail experts say half of a toy store’s annual sales occur between today and the end of December. . . . Get a jump on the crowds by checking out today’s Mall Guide on B3.

TOY STORIES: Disney’s “Toy Story” chronicles the adventures of toys afraid their boy is losing interest. Indeed, psychologists say kids begin tending away from toys at about age 8. Still, Disney has licensed stars Woody and Buzz as action figures and stuffed toys. . . . And look for a new spin on old faves. Mr. Potato Head, Slinky and plastic Army men all got new boxes tied to the film.

TOY MAN: Folks such as Bradley Madrid, above, make the difference at Buddy Brown Toys, allowing the small, 30-year-old shop in Studio City to compete with discount retail chains. Madrid takes the time to play with kids as their parents shop. The store also offers free wrapping and clerks who know the difference between Thomas the Tank Engine and Timmy the Tooth. . . . Owner Mary Brown--Buddy was her late husband--says the business of playing keeps her young.

TOP TOYS: No toy this year has taken off the way Cabbage Patch Kids and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers once did. But Toys R Us lists its top sellers so far. Among the hits are a few blasts from the past. “Star Wars” action figures are hot. So is the venerable Monopoly board game. For doll lovers, Hot Skates Barbie and Dr. Barbie are it. . . . In video games, the leaders include “Chrono Trigger” and “College Football.”

BAD TOYS: The Public Interest Research Group warns parents of small children not to buy toys with small parts or balloons that may pose choking hazards. . . . Beware especially of Big Buddy 5 Piece Dump Truck and Brio wooden train sets.

TOYS FOR TOTS: The annual Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign kicks into high gear this weekend. . . . Look for donation barrels at stores or drop off new toys at the Marine Training Center, 6337 Balboa Blvd., Encino.
