DIVISION II

* SAUGUS (6-5) vs. ANTELOPE VALLEY (10-1)

At Antelope Valley High, 7:30 p.m.

No team in the region has Antelope Valley’s speed. Saugus has been a strong defensive team, allowing an average of 208 yards a game. But the Centurions have flopped when playing teams with great skill players, as in losses to Los Alamitos (44-0) and Hart (47-7). Antelope Valley is in the same class. Saugus has scored 40 points or more twice this season. Antelope Valley, defending division champion, averages 45.3 points. Jermaine Lewis has rushed for a school-record 4,825 yards and 69 touchdowns in his career. Bobby Brown, who has passed for 1,070 yards, 12 touchdown passes and only one interception in 103 passes, has several talented athletes at his disposal, including all-purpose backs Trymon Redick and Tony Walker. Saugus has been plagued by injuries on both lines, but none was as costly as a broken thumb that sidelined Derek Lyons (12 sacks) for the season two weeks ago. Kevin Carrasco has passed for 986 yards and 12 touchdowns, but he completes only 46.8% of his passes. Jeremy Mushinski has 491 yards in 122 carries.

* HART (9-2) vs. DOMINGUEZ (4-7)

At Dominguez High, 7:30 p.m.

Coming off a 56-20 victory over Inglewood, the Indians might be advised to remember that 42 points were not enough in a playoff game against Dominguez two years ago. That game ended with Hart’s Mike Kocicka, who passed for 322 yards, getting tackled at the Dominguez five-yard line and not having enough time to run another play. Hart will count on Steve McKeon, Ted Iacenda & Co. to wipe out the memory. McKeon has completed 132 of 234 passes for 2,629 yards and 28 touchdowns. Iacenda has rushed for 1,472 yards and, with 320 yards receiving, needs 208 to reach 2,000. His 28 touchdowns this season give him give him 88 in his three-year varsity career. Cody Joyce (36 receptions, 842 yards), J.B. Nelson (33-589) and Kevin McLaughlin (25-564) are McKeon’s favorite receivers and have caught 24 of his scoring passes. Dominguez quarterback Jason Thomas, a 6-4, 215-pound sophomore, scored three touchdowns in a 21-10 victory over Quartz Hill last week on runs of 35 and 69 yards and a 95-yard kickoff return.

DIVISION III

* NEWBURY PARK (11-0) vs. AYALA (10-1)

At Chino High, 7:30 p.m.

Ayala finished second in the Sierra League, losing only to Diamond Bar, and has outscored opponents, 298-109. The Bulldogs have a strong running game based on misdirection, but have passed only 80 times. Ayala’s wing-T attack last week rushed for 406 yards in a 42-17 victory over Dos Pueblos. Halfback Jason Taylor and fullback Anthony Redd each have rushed for more than 1,200 yards. “The wing-T takes a lot of preparation to stop and that takes away from the time spent preparing our offense,” Newbury Park Coach George Hurley said. However, Ayala had trouble containing Dos Pueblos’ passing game. “That’s encouraging for us,” Hurley said. The Panthers have the state’s top passing offense with junior quarterback Chris Czernek (3,593 yards, 37 touchdowns) and receivers Justin Vint (53 catches), Patrick Reddick (49), DaJuan Hawkins (47) and Eddie Patterson (43). Czernek passed for 380 yards in Newbury Park’s 43-10 first-round victory over St. Francis.

* THOUSAND OAKS (9-2) vs. DIAMOND BAR (11-0)

At Walnut High, 7:30 p.m.

Each week Thousand Oaks tailback Brandon Jackson is sidelined with a shoulder separation, the going gets tougher. The Lancers rushed for only 33 yards in 27 carries in their 20-14 overtime defeat of Serra last week. “Brandon is still real iffy,” Coach Mike Kelly said. Back at full strength is linebacker/fullback Jud Southwell, and his quickness is needed against run-oriented Diamond Bar, champion of the Sierra League. Brothers Lathian and Deron Tyler are explosive offensive players who also return kicks and play defensive back. Lathian, a 5-7, 168-pound senior tailback, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards. Deron, a 5-6, 148-pound junior receiver, gains yardage on reverses. Tight end/linebacker Brian Surgener (6-4, 212) is Diamond Bar’s best receiver and defensive player. Without Jackson, pressure falls on Thousand Oaks quarterback Scott McEwan (1,694 yards passing) and receivers Barrett Grindle (37 catches) and Eric Allen (two touchdowns last week).

* NOTRE DAME (11-0) vs. WESTLAKE (6-4-1)

At Westlake High, 7:30 p.m.

Notre Dame has won 20 consecutive games since being upset by Harvard-Westlake, 14-10, in a nonleague game in October, 1994. Senior Ryan Bowne (1,829 passing yards, 25 touchdowns) has piloted Notre Dame to each victory, as he did last week by passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-12 victory over Buena. Alvan Arzu (1,025 yards, 13 touchdowns) and Justin Fargas (478 yards, seven touchdowns) are effective runners, and Bowne spreads the spirals among Troy Garner (38 catches, 672 yards, 12 touchdowns), Nick Kounalis (30 for 417, six) and Tripp Nassour (19 for 270). Westlake defeated Bell Gardens, 35-14, as junior Casey Preston passed for 144 yards and four touchdowns. Preston, who replaced Steve Aylsworth at quarterback four weeks ago, has passed for 803 yards and nine touchdowns. Aylsworth, who moved to split end, made 11 catches against Bell Gardens. Jason Victor leads Westlake with 47 catches for 832 yards and seven touchdowns. Jamal Harris has rushed for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns.

* CHAMINADE (10-1) vs. NOGALES (8-3)

At Nogales High, 7:30 p.m.

Chaminade’s only loss was to Notre Dame, 19-15, in the Mission League finale two weeks ago. The Eagles rebounded with a 34-26 first-round victory over Alhambra--a game that was not as close as the score suggests. The running of Jason Giovannettone (1,307 yards, 18 touchdowns) and playmaking of double-threat quarterback Jason Zdenek (861 yards passing, 440 yards rushing) have carried Chaminade. Tight end Gabe Crecion is the Eagles’ best blocker and top receiver with 21 catches for 360 yards. Nogales received a boost last week with the return of senior Demetrius Stampley, who rushed for 800 yards in five games before suffering a knee injury. Stampley rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown last week against Santa Barbara. Quarterback Ray Rodriguez runs an option offense.

DIVISION IX

* MONTCLAIR PREP (10-0) vs. MOORPARK (8-3)

At Moorpark High, 7:30 p.m.

Montclair Prep ranks first and Moorpark is second in team defense among area Southern Section teams still playing. The Mounties surrender an average of only 130 yards a game while the Musketeers give up 155. Akil Anderson has rushed for 1,138 yards and 18 touchdowns for Montclair Prep, the 1994 Division X champion which has won 18 games in a row. Demetris Green has 641 yards and six touchdowns. Moorpark counters with a balanced attack piloted by Bryan Paul (116 of 210, 1,725 yards, 14 touchdowns, nine interceptions). Mike Aguilar has rushed for 533 yards and four touchdowns. David Burns has 52 receptions for 804 yards and nine touchdowns.

* ST. BONAVENTURE (8-3) vs. CARPINTERIA (8-3)

At Ventura High, 7:30 p.m.

St. Bonaventure gets a rematch with the Tri-Valley League champion Warriors, who won a midseason meeting at Ventura High, 30-29. The Seraphs are paced by Topi Sanchez (1,837 yards rushing, 27 touchdowns in 267 carries) and his brother, Teohua (166 of 272, 1,783 yards passing, 13 touchdowns, five interceptions), along with a powerful offensive line. Pepe Villasenor has 57 receptions for 600 yards and four touchdowns. Carpinteria deploys an option attack piloted by Brian Benza, who has rushed for 576 yards and six touchdowns and has completed 57 of 95 passes for 791 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jeff Shaw, the school’s all-time rushing leader, has 816 yards and 12 touchdowns. Douglas Burrell has 736 yards and 12 touchdowns.

DIVISION X

* PARACLETE (6-5) vs. BIG BEAR (9-2)

At Big Bear Middle School, 1 p.m.

Paraclete’s 35-14 victory over Santa Fe League champion La Salle last week might be considered an upset by some, but it was a long-overdue victory. The Spirits lost to three ranked teams by a total of 12 points: No. 2 and undefeated Kern Valley, 28-20, No. 4 Rosamond, 28-27, and No. 8 Bishop, 39-36. Ben Joyce has passed for 1,505 yards and 17 touchdowns for Paraclete. Sal Iabichella (14 touchdowns) and Lance Austin (nine) have combined to rush for 1,158 yards. Jesse Loa has 29 catches, 570 yards and 13 touchdowns, with Ryan Johnson at 28, 439, two. Big Bear’s Robbie Benson has passed for 1,658 yards, 22 touchdowns.
