Dana Hills High School is kicking off a $1.1-million project to upgrade its athletic fields.

Two softball fields are to be built, and lighting, a concession stand, bleachers and restrooms added.

The new fields will also be used for soccer, field hockey and football games, said Bonnie Nicholl, community services manager.

The project has met with some opposition from residents who live near the site at Street of the Golden Lantern and Acapulco Drive.

They are concerned that the new lighting will spill over to homes in the neighborhood and that the expansion of sports facilities will bring noise, traffic and crime to the area.

In an effort to minimize any negative effects on the community, the plan calls for the 70-foot field lights to shut off automatically at 9 p.m. in the summer and 7 p.m. in the winter.

A groundbreaking will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the high school, 33333 Street of the Golden Lantern.
