A gunman held up a Super Crown bookstore and fired at a customer who chased him in an attempt to get a description of the robber’s vehicle, authorities said Sunday.

No one was injured during the Saturday night stickup in which the robber left with an undisclosed amount of money, Police Detective Mike Carpenter said.

About 7:30 p.m., a gun-toting man in his late 30s wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap walked into the bookstore in the 300 block of South State College Boulevard and demanded cash, Carpenter said.

Witnesses outside the store told police they saw customers and employees inside lying on the floor as the gunman fled, heading southwest toward South Randolph Avenue and Imperial Highway.

A customer from the store ran after the robber, who turned around and fired one round at the man but missed, police said. The robber was at large Sunday as police continued the investigation.
