Assemblyman Puts His Office on Wheels

Assemblyman Brooks Firestone (R-Los Olivos) has found a solution for getting around a district that includes most of Santa Barbara County and parts of Ventura County: a mobile office.

The Friends of Firestone campaign committee recently purchased a used school bus for $16,000 to help the legislator better reach constituents.

“It’s a big district, and we need to have a presence,” Firestone said. “I was going to rent an office, but this seemed to be the most inexpensive way of doing it.”

Firestone said he plans to make a circuit of eight locations throughout the district on one or two Fridays a month, starting next week. The bus will park in the mornings and afternoons in neighborhoods in Solvang, Goleta, Carpinteria, Ventura, Ojai and Santa Paula.

The mobile office is the first of its kind in the state, Firestone said. Other legislators have expressed interest in following Firestone’s lead, he said.

The bus has been dubbed the District Utility Mobile Business Office. Firestone and his staff jokingly call it “DUMBO.”
