Pacoima : Group Appealing for ‘Adopters’ of Needy
A Pacoima-based nonprofit organization is appealing to residents, local merchants and corporations to “adopt” poor families during the holiday season.
Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND) helps out families who live in garages, sleep on floors, have no heat, refrigerators or stoves, and are unable to provide gifts for their children or to cook special holiday meals.
MEND provides free food, clothing and other services to more than 10,000 northeast San Fernando Valley individuals each month.
Families selected for adoption by MEND have been interviewed by volunteers, who conduct home visits to determine their status. The size of the families varies.
In agreeing to adopt one of the families, the adopter provides gifts for family members--especially small children--and gives useful household items and food to make a complete holiday meal.
MEND prefers that adopters personally deliver the gifts so families can meet them.
