54 HOURS : Racers, Start Your Skates

L.A. Kings star Wayne Gretzky may be an artist on the ice in hockey skates, but on Sunday he’ll stump for in-line skates at the Smith Barney/Beverly Hills 5/10K Run and 15K Roll. Gretzky wears in-line skates not only in workouts outside the hockey rink, but also for play with his kids, where there’s no rough checking or high-sticking to worry about.

On Sunday, everyone is invited to play as the popular Beverly Hills race returns to town, after a seven-year absence. New to the event, along with the in-line race, is the Briefcase 5K, open to three-person teams.

NBC 4’s Dr. Bruce Hensel and TV commentator Mario Machado will co-emcee from a stage at the start of the event, at Beverly Hills High School, 241 S. Moreno Drive, Beverly Hills.

While runners and rollers navigate the streets of Beverly Hills, wanna-be racers can explore fitness techniques and products at Lifexpo ‘95, a health fair, from 7:30-11 a.m. (You can borrow a pair of in-line skates and pads from the Ultra Wheels booth for the race, or try them out in a demo area at the expo.) Registration 7 a.m. $18 (includes T-shirt); expo free. (310) 550-4654.
