NEWPORT BEACH : Board Takes 1st Step for Sale of School Site

Officials of the Newport-Mesa School District said a decision by the trustees declaring a school to be surplus property opens the door to selling the land to raise funds for the district.

“It is one of the steps associated with an eventual sale,” Supt. Mac Bernd said. “The board is just keeping our options open.”

The trustees Tuesday declared Monte Vista School in Costa Mesa surplus property, meaning it is not now needed to accommodate students and no need for it is imminent.

The former elementary school site is now used as a continuation school.

Bernd said the school could eventually be closed and sold without causing overcrowding in other area elementary schools.

“There are still two schools, Harper and Lindbergh, which could be reopened if we need the space,” Bernd said.

Both Harper and Lindbergh have been leased, but Bernd said the district reserved the right to break the lease if the schools are suddenly needed for educational purposes.
