SIGN WHERE? Recently appointed Supervisor Don Saltarelli has already said that joining the board was “the biggest mistake of my life.” So when one group threatened him with recall Tuesday night if he didn’t side with them on the charter issue, he was quick to respond: “Bring your recall petition to my house, I’ll sign it.” . . . Board Chairman Roger R. Stanton, on his way out himself after the county bankruptcy, quipped to Saltarelli: “It looks like your dream has come true.”

HOOPIN’ IT UP: Wander by the Rossmoor Athletic Club most mornings and you’ll see a 73-year-old retired Seal Beach dentist shooting a basketball. Practicing? Technically, yes, but Tom Amberry doesn’t need to--he almost never misses a foul shot (E1). . . . It was here two years ago that he set the world record for free throws--2,750 in a row. “He helps out players here, gives them tips and stuff,” says a trainer. “Everybody knows who he is. We had his record posted.”

BENCHING LAW: After graduating from Yale last year with a 3.4 grade average, Eva Zakrzewski of Laguna Beach had one goal: law school. But an unexpected detour: Her summers as a lifeguard on Orange County’s beaches led to a lifeguard competition in Santa Barbara, which led to someone deciding she’d be perfect for TV’s “Baywatch.” Now “Baywatch” has led to commercials, and it looks like a movie is next. . . . And law school? “I’m already making more money than most lawyers,” she says. “Things are looking great for me right now.”

CHANNEL ZERO? Several Orange County arts organizations will observe today’s international Day Without Art (F1) by dimming gallery lights, shrouding artworks or closing entirely to draw attention to the toll AIDS has had on the arts and entertainment. . . . “It would be great if they shut down TV for a day,” says Naida Osline, director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, “or have a day without movies.”
