Ten men who attacked and seriously injured an American photographer, calling her a child-stealer, were sentenced to long prison terms by an appeals court. Diana Weinstock of Fairbanks, Alaska, was 52 when she was viciously beaten March 29, 1994, by a mob in San Cristobal Verpaz, 45 miles north of Guatemala City. Her attackers mistakenly believed that she had stolen a child. The child was later found at a religious procession. The incident was one of a number of attacks by residents of rural Guatemalan areas on foreigners believed to be stealing children. Prison sentences of 26 years were given to five men for attempted murder, while the five others were sentenced to 14 years for being accessories. A lower court had absolved the men, which brought a protest from the U.S. Embassy. Defendants in Guatemala can be retried on appeal from the government even if a court finds them not guilty.
