PLAYING FOR A CURE

Are you in a mid-holidays funk? Feeling exhausted, hung-down, brung-down, hung-up, strung-out, vulnerable, blue and nostalgic all at the same time? Well, the Universal Amphitheatre might have a cure. It’s presenting concerts this weekend by pop stars Kenny G and Donna Summer.

Sax player Kenny G will perform his jazz-flavored pop in concert Saturday. G is one of the best-selling instrumentalists in recording history. His 1992 hit, “Breathless,” sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and this holiday season his year-old “Miracles: The Holiday Album” was again among the top sellers. Many purists knock G’s music as not being real jazz. Jazz schmazz. Whatever it is, a lot of people really like this stuff.

Disco diva Donna Summer will headline a New Year’s Eve bash at the amphitheater Sunday. More than any other individual except possibly John Travolta, Summer came to personify the disco era.

She had a string of dance hits in the late 1970s and early ‘80s that included “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Last Dance.” She even appeared in the disco film epic “Thank God It’s Friday” in 1978. During her heyday, she racked up eight gold LPs, two platinum LPs, 10 gold singles and two platinum singles.

But, although she’s worked hard to shed the disco image and sound, her last Top 40 hit was 1983’s “She Works Hard for the Money.” Who knows? Now that Travolta is again the hottest property in show business, maybe Summer isn’t far behind. Her sold-out performance last August at the amphitheater was her first Los Angeles appearance in more than seven years.
