SANTA ANA : School Trustees Select New Board President

Sal Mendoza, a 50-year-old insurance broker, has been elected president of the school board for the second time in three years.

Santa Ana Unified School District trustees recently elected Mendoza by a 3-2 vote, with Trustees Audrey Yamagata-Noji and Robert W. Balen dissenting.

Yamagata-Noji, the former president, said she expected the board to take a more conservative direction.

The position of president, however, is largely ceremonial. The president runs the meetings and represents the district but has only one vote on the board.

Mendoza said he will focus on following the District Vision, a list of mostly common-sense goals.
