From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Texas returns to its Wild West roots Monday when a law goes into effect allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons for the first time in 125 years. Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Sherri Deatherage-Green said 171,000 people have requested permit applications and 35,000 have actually applied. The law requires citizens to take a 15-hour gun-handling course and pass background checks to see if they have a criminal past or a history of mental illness.
