SEA CLEANING: An added byproduct of last winter’s heavy rainstorms: Tons of silty clay sediment settled on the ocean floor in Dana Point and Sunset harbors. Because it could present a hazard to boats, the county will soon dredge both marinas, using special suction hoses. . . . “It basically just sucks up the material and dumps it in a barge,” says spokesman Larry Paul. Where will they take it all? Five miles out to sea, to be dumped.

FACE OFF: You don’t have to pay those mighty Mighty Ducks ticket prices to see a hockey game here. On Jan. 18, the USC and UCLA hockey teams square off at the new Disney Ice Center on Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim. Tickets are available at $8, but the 800 seats are expected to be filled. Hockey is not an NCAA-sanctioned sport at the two schools. Each has put together what’s known as a club hockey team. . . . If you want more formal college hockey: The NCAA championships will be at The Pond of Anaheim in 1998.

PEACE MARCH: It’s been a globe-trotting road for Laguna Niguel artist Fitz Maurice’s piece “War on Human Rights, first shown two years ago at a U.N. human rights conference in Vienna. Since then it’s been exhibited in Germany, Africa, Cuba, Bosnia--and Torrance. It’s now on display at the Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach. It’s for sale for $25,000--artists have to eat--but Maurice says: “I just want as many people to enjoy it as can.” It goes on the road again soon.

PUTTERING AROUND: If you’re buying a Mercedes-Benz, the least you can expect is a little pampering, right? A national newsletter put out by Grossman Communications lists the year’s top “money-making schemes so inventive and outlandish that big corporations wouldn’t dare try them.” . . . No. 1: Fletcher Jones Motorcars of Newport Beach. It installed a temporary putting green for service customers and potential buyers. You even had a chance at a free day of golf at a local course--if you agreed to test drive a Mercedes.
