With its towering twins creating opportunities up and down the court, Harvard-Westlake defeated Dunbar High, 62-43, Thursday night and advanced to the semifinals of the “Slam Dunk to the Beach” basketball tournament.

Jarron Collins had 13 points and six rebounds. His twin brother, Jason, had seven points and seven rebounds. But the game stats tell only part of the story.

From the opening tipoff--in which Jason easily swatted the ball to Jarron--the pair worked together to disable Dunbar’s quick offensive attack and set Harvard loose.

“Those two kids played well, no doubt about it,” said dejected Dunbar Coach Paul Smith, who sat alone in the locker room at game’s end with his head in his hands.

“And the rest of the team complements them well.”

It was Alex Gelbard, Harvard’s 6-foot-4 senior forward, who led the team in scoring with 16 points, including five for five from the field.

Rico Cabrera, the Wolverines’ quick guard, scored eight points and helped solve Dunbar’s zone-press defense.

Harvard (8-1) beat the press with long, cross-court passes and prompted Dunbar, a top Baltimore program with a national reputation, to scrap the strategy in the second half.

“We came in with a game plan and we executed it,” Jarron Collins said.

“We controlled the tempo. We got the ball inside and when we do that, we score.”

Harvard opened the game with a 6-0 run and didn’t look back. By halftime, the Wolverines were up, 27-19, and weren’t threatened thereafter.

Thrilled by the victory, Harvard Coach Greg Hilliard was looking ahead to tonight’s contest against Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic. That team is led by senior forward Jakub Juskowiak, who converted six three-point attempts in Roman Catholic’s 81-80 victory over Wilmington.

“I have to remind them that even though they beat Dunbar (4-1), we have to be ready to play even better,” Hilliard said.
