SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It wasn’t hard for the Canoga Park High boys’ basketball team to get motivated for its semifinal game Thursday night against Antelope Valley in the Hart tournament.

All the Hunters had to do was think back to earlier this month when Antelope Valley bounced them from the semifinals of the Saugus tournament, handing them a 15-point defeat.

But Canoga Park (10-2) redeemed itself when reserve forward Pat Farzaneh hit a 10-foot jump shot with five seconds remaining to give the Hunters a 74-72 victory.

Canoga Park will face Hart in the final tonight at 8 p.m.

Canoga Park used its transition game to take control early. The Hunters scored 12 first-half points off Antelope turnovers en route to a 47-35 halftime lead.

Canoga Park still led comfortably, 70-59, with 3 minutes 39 seconds left in the game when guard Carloes Harper fouled out after scoring 28 points.

Harper’s departure set up a stirring Antelope Valley comeback.

The Antelopes (9-4) went on a 13-2 run and tied the score at 72-72 on a three-point play by Ziarre Williams with 1:02 left.

Williams scored nine of his 25 points during the surge.

Meanwhile, the Hunters were desperately searching for a way to regain their composure. Finally, Farzaneh stepped forward for the Hunters.

“I think our guys lost their focus after Carloes fouled out,” Canoga Park Coach Ralph Turner said. “To be honest, we were running scared. But hey, we sucked it up and made it to the final.”
