Iacenda, Lewis Named Top Division II Players : High school football: Czernek, who set state passing record, is Division III co-player of the year; 31 other area athletes are selected to the Division II and III teams.

Hart High’s Ted Iacenda and Antelope Valley’s Jermaine Lewis were named Southern Section Division II co-players of the year.

Garnering the top award in Division III was Newbury Park’s Chris Czernek, who was named co-player of the year along with Diamond Bar’s Lathian Tyler.

Thirty-one other area players were selected to the Division II and Division III teams.

Iacenda, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound senior running back, set a section career record, scoring 604 points. Iacenda rushed for 1,869 yards this season and scored 39 touchdowns, giving him 99 in his three-year career.

For Lewis, a 5-7, 172-pound senior running back who rushed for a region-high 2,511 yards and 32 touchdowns, it is the third consecutive year of divisional recognition. Lewis, the 1995 Times player of the year, was named to the Division II team in 1994 and the Division I team in ’93.

Newbury Park flourished on the arm of Czernek (5-10, 170), a junior quarterback who set a state record by throwing for 4,362 yards, breaking a mark set two years ago by Newbury Park’s Keith Smith. Czernek also set a section record (formerly held by Pat Haden of Bishop Amat) with 45 touchdowns.

Of the 15 area players named to the Division II team, five are from Hart, four from Antelope Valley. Other Hart honorees are senior quarterback Steve McKeon (5-9, 170), junior wide receiver Cody Joyce (6-1, 190), senior linebacker Marc Zimmerman (6-3, 215) and senior defensive back Todd Renfro (5-11, 185).

Antelope Valley players include senior lineman Michael Deagon (6-3, 278), senior linebacker Sean Cartaya (6-2, 210) and junior defensive back Tony Walker (6-1, 170).

Burroughs landed two players: sophomore wide receiver Glenn Adriatico (5-9, 140) and senior linebacker Mike Barrett (6-1, 195). Others include Littlerock senior running back Lafayette Bailey (6-0, 165), Crescenta Valley senior lineman Oshin Monarchian (6-5, 260), Saugus senior defensive lineman Derek Lyons (6-1, 223) and Quartz Hill junior defensive lineman Jacob Waasdorp.

Nineteen of the 32 players selected in Division III are from the region. Czernek is one of five players from Newbury Park. The others include senior wide receiver DaJuan Hawkins (6-5, 200), junior wide receiver Pat Reddick (5-10, 177) and brothers Brant (6-2, 220) and Brock Diediker (6-2, 235), both senior linebackers.

Four players from Notre Dame were selected: senior quarterback Ryan Bowne (6-0, 185), senior linemen Kareem Missoumi (6-3, 270) and Edgar Nava (6-2, 290), and senior defensive back Troy Garner (6-3, 195).

The three Chaminade honorees include senior running back Jason Giovannettone (5-8, 154), senior tight end Gabe Crecion (6-4, 220) and senior defensive back Jason Zdenek (5-11, 174).

Others include Westlake seniors Steve Aylsworth (6-0, 175), a utility selection, and Jamal Harris (6-0, 190), a defensive back and Hueneme senior running back Ronney Jenkins (5-11, 175), Agoura senior lineman Elliot Silvers (6-7, 325), Thousand Oaks senior lineman R.J. Starr (6-3, 265), Camarillo senior kicker Shawn Nakamura (5-8, 180) and Simi Valley junior punter John Gonzalez (5-11, 180).
