NBA ROUNDUP : Motta Finally Joins the 900 Club

Dallas Coach Dick Motta got his long-awaited 900th victory Thursday night as the Mavericks defeated the Vancouver Grizzlies, 103-101, at Dallas, on Tony Dumas’ off-balance, 12-foot bank shot as the buzzer sounded in the second overtime.

Motta, who had been stuck on 899 while the Mavericks lost six consecutive games, joins Lenny Wilkens (981) and Red Auerbach (938) as the only coaches with 900 or more victories.

Indiana 91, Miami 77--Some day, the Heat is going to defeat the Pacers at Market Square Arena. Miami tried for the 14th time since joining the NBA in 1988 and remained winless while the Pacers recorded their eighth overall victory at home.

Cleveland 86, New York 76--When Michael Cage felt Patrick Ewing land on his foot midway through the first quarter, he knew the Cavaliers’ game against the Knicks at New York had changed completely. Ewing sprained his right ankle and never returned. X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day.

Detroit 113, Toronto 91--The Pistons scored 70 points in the second half--40 in the third quarter, their best since January of 1994. Allan Houston scored 28 of his 29 points in the second half.

Houston 97, New Jersey 82--Hakeem Olajuwon had his 12th career triple-double and the Rockets made 13 three-point shots. Olajuwon finished with 22 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

Utah 99, Minnesota 83--Karl Malone had 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Jazz held the Timberwolves to their lowest output of the season. Minnesota is 1-14 against the Jazz in Salt Lake City.
