TRADE
Canada, Israel Expect to Reach Pact: The countries expect to agree on a free-trade accord by June to eliminate tariffs between them, officials said. “Negotiations are still going on, but we hope to have an agreement finalized by the middle of 1996,” said acting Canadian Ambassador Eli Yerushalyim. Israel wants the accord to overcome any trade disadvantage it has in Canada because of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Canada is eager to tap into the $5 billion of Israeli trade now headed to the U.S. as American-built goods enter Israel duty-free. The original goal was to establish bilateral free trade of goods by Jan. 1, 1996, bringing Canada up to speed with the United States on the growing trade market with Israel.
