VISTA Bus Service May End Feb. 1

Fixed-route bus service through Oak Park, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills could be eliminated Feb. 1, under a recommendation to be considered Friday by county transportation officials.

Staff members of the Ventura County Transportation Commission have recommended that the seven-member panel cancel the fixed-route service because very few people ride the buses.

Established in July 1994, the VISTA bus service operated between Agoura Hills and Simi Valley, with stops in Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark.

By November 1994, Oak Park officials had persuaded bus operators to expand the service to Oak Park. But as few as two people a day were taking advantage of the service, officials say.

Ginger Gherardi, executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission, said Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and Oak Park residents will still have public transportation options available to them through the dial-a-ride service.

The Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council has already agreed that the 13-month experiment was not working.
