Van Nuys : Panel to Hear Unocal’s Liquor Permit Appeal

A Los Angeles appeals panel on Jan. 16 will consider objections to a zoning official’s denial of a city permit for a Van Nuys gas station to sell alcoholic beverages.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will review an appeal by Unocal Corp. of a decision made by Associate Zoning Administrator Horace Tramel. In an Oct. 23 report, Tramel refused to grant the liquor permit because, he said, there are enough liquor outlets in the area and because of the neighborhood’s high crime rate.

Unocal has proposed renovating the gas station at the corner of Sherman Way and Sepulveda Boulevard, building a mini-mart and planting new landscaping. Unocal officials have said that they would adopt voluntary restrictions designed to discourage loitering and public drunkenness.

Nearby homeowners and City Councilman Marvin Braude, who represents the area, oppose the liquor permit but say they like the renovation project otherwise.

The hearing will be at 201 N. Figueroa St., Room 170, Los Angeles, at 9:30 a.m.
