San Fernando : City Seeking Name for New Bus Service
The 12-year-old San Fernando Dial-a-Ride bus service is about to get a make-over and a new name.
According to Ed Montan, director of the city’s Recreation and Community Services Department, two new buses will arrive within a few days to replace the city’s two aging Dial-a-Ride buses. The new buses are expected to be placed into service in February. Meantime, Tuesday is the deadline for entries in the city-sponsored contest to name the service.
The name with the most zip will earn a San Fernando resident a one-year free pass for the service and a free dinner for two at a local restaurant.
Although the name Dial-a-Ride is accurate for the service, in which riders call to schedule a bus ride to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment, Montan concedes that it lacks a certain oomph.
“Calling it Dial-a-Ride is like saying you’re going to photocopy something,” Montan said. “What we need is that brand name, like Xerox.”
The Recreation and Community Services Commission has already received about 25 entries for the contest, all of which will be considered at the commission’s meeting on Tuesday. The commission will forward a list of finalists to the City Council, which will decide the winning name.
Entries can be sent to the recreation department, 208 Park Ave., San Fernando 91340-3009, attention Bus Naming Contest.
