Frederic Miller, History Chair at Cal State Fullerton, Dies

Frederic H. Miller, professor and chairman of the history department at Cal State Fullerton, has died of a massive stroke, school officials announced Tuesday. He was 56.

Miller died Dec. 27, three days after he suffered the stroke, school authorities said in a prepared statement.

He joined the university’s faculty in 1969 as an assistant professor and in 1990 was named chairman of the history department.

He also had been a member of the Academic Senate, coordinator of the Russian and East European Area Studies Program and treasurer of the Patrons of the Library.

Miller, an ordained minister, served as the Episcopal chaplain on campus.

A native of Minnesota, he received his master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Minnesota.

Plans are pending for a campus service to take place after the start of the spring semester. Services also took place Saturday.

Miller is survived by his wife, Emily; a daughter, Caroline; sons Nathaniel, Timothy, Joshua and Jeremy; and two sisters, Molly Clevenger and Linda Mock.

In lieu of flowers, relatives ask that donations be made to St. Peter’s Memorial Fund at the Episcopal Church in San Pedro. In addition, friends of the Miller family are establishing a trust fund in his memory to be used for the education of Caroline, Nathaniel and Timothy.
