World IN BRIEF : EGYPT : In Surprise, Mubarak Names New Premier
President Hosni Mubarak unexpectedly changed prime ministers for the first time in nine years after parliamentary elections that opposition leaders denounced as fraudulent. Mubarak named economist Kamal Ganzoury to form a new government, replacing Atef Sedki, who had served longer than any prime minister in Egypt’s history. The change appeared designed to quiet opposition demands for Mubarak to scrap the Nov. 26 elections, which were marked by violence and charges of widespread vote-rigging by his ruling National Democratic Party. In addition to replacing Sedki, Mubarak was expected to change at least five of the 32 Cabinet ministers, most of whom have served for years.
