Westside : South Bay : Anti-Gang Program Marks Its 10th Year
To celebrate a decade of service, the Harbor Area Gang Alternatives Program will hold a series of commencement ceremonies for students who have completed their Anti-Gang Curriculum.
Twenty-three elementary schools participate in the San Pedro-based nonprofit program, which was established in 1986 to curb rising gang violence in the South Bay. Staff members visit fourth-grade classes once a week.
At the end of the 12-week lesson, students participate in a graduation ceremony and take a pledge to stay in school and away from gangs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson will host six ceremonies this month to honor the students.
