Campaign Reformers Handing In Signatures
Local backers of a sweeping campaign finance reform proposal said Monday they have collected enough signatures to place the measure on the November state ballot.
Volunteers collected more than 680,000 signatures in favor of the California Political Reform Initiative--well over the 433,000 required, said Shirley Grindle, a longtime government-reform advocate.
About 50,000 signatures were gathered in Orange County, Grindle said.
The initiative would limit the amount of money candidates could collect, ban some contributions from lobbyists and restrict the ability of incumbents to accumulate huge campaign war chests.
The act would cover legislative and statewide races, as well as some elections in cities, counties and special districts.
Backers of the proposal include the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, United We Stand America and the American Assn. of Retired Persons.
Activists plan to submit the last of the Orange County petitions at noon Wednesday at the county registrar of voters office in Santa Ana.
