Basketball/Guard

As a freshman, Ortiz was primarily a shooter; this year he has been going to the basket more with good results. For instance, with the Eagles trailing Whittier Christian by one and time running out last Tuesday, the Eagles cleared the left side of the floor, Ortiz beat his man and made a layup with six seconds left in a 74-73 victory. Ortiz scored 24 points in the game and 23 in a 69-57 victory over Brethren Christian.

* Santa Ana Valley, senior. Averaged 23.5 points to lead the Falcons to a 56-44 victory over Canyon and a 57-54 victory over Orange in Century League play.

Mario Rosario

* Huntington Beach Claremont. Scored 24 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime in a 66-63 victory over Long Beach Gethsemane Baptist.

Soccer

Mike Morgan

* Sunny Hills, junior. Scored three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 3-2 victory over Sonora that solidified the Lancers’ hold on first place in the Freeway League.

Wrestling

Sadie Morales

* Santa Ana, senior. Only Orange County wrestler to reach a final at the Five Counties Tournament, losing to Carlos Blanco of Moreno Valley Canyon Springs at 127 pounds and helping the Saints to a seventh-place finish.
