Pilots Union Requests Federal Mediation: The Allied Pilots Assn., which represents about 9,000 American Airlines pilots, has been negotiating a contract with the carrier since June 1994. American Airlines had planned to request mediation together with the pilots association union but the union declined, a spokesman for the carrier said. At issue are job security, pay and some working conditions, APA President James G. Sovich said. American has been asking for salary concessions from its pilots, saying the move would make the company more competitive. The airline is a subsidiary of Dallas-based AMR Corp.
