Angel Reliever Harvey Passes Examination of Right Elbow
ANAHEIM — Angel relief pitcher Bryan Harvey passed a physical examination of his elbow, club officials said Friday.
Harvey, 32, underwent surgery to reconstruct his right elbow May 3. He signed a $500,000 major league contract that could pay him as much as $1.75 million with incentives, but it was contingent on passing the physical.
Harvey has 177 career saves, but also has had three arm operations. He is projected as a middle reliever, but his role could change depending on the health of closer Lee Smith.
Smith, who had 37 saves last season and is the majors’ all-time saves leader with 471, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in November after an off-season hunting accident.
