Cell Phone Abuse
Your revelations of the cellular phone abuse in our city and county governments are illustrative of bureaucracies run amok: There is neither responsibility nor accountability.
Our elected representatives and their apparent contempt for the taxpayer have become a large part of the problem. They cry poverty and budget shortfalls, yet they routinely ignore waste, abuse and fraud. Had The Times not exposed this fiasco, it would likely have continued in perpetuity.
The Times seems to be the only voice loud enough to be heard over the din of indifference that permeates the chambers of our elected officials. You’re an excellent watchdog. Please keep barking.

* As a deputy public defender (in Riverside County), I was intrigued to learn that deputy public defenders would appear more honest with their expense accounting than any other county agency (Jan. 7).
Of course, the powers that be in the public defender’s office wisely set up a system to save employees from temptation. It is a sad but true fact that fear of getting caught is the strongest motivator to do the right thing.
