Westside : DRUG-FREE ZONE
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter proposed Tuesday that several Westside beaches and parks be made “drug-free zones.”
Galanter’s motion says the designation can “help deter crime” and create an “increased sense of community safety” and pride. The city-owned areas she wants to include are: Del Rey Beach from the Marina Channel to El Segundo, including Del Rey Lagoon Park, and all public beaches and park area in Venice and the Marina Peninsula from Santa Monica to the Marina Channel.
A 1994 state law allows cities and counties to designate certain areas drug-free, which means people caught with narcotics in those areas can be imprisoned for an additional year over the punishment imposed for the conviction.
Signs would be posted along the parks and beaches to notify people of the status.
The item will be up for discussion by the City Council next Tuesday, a Galanter spokesperson said.
