Santiago Wins League Title
Santiago won its second consecutive Garden Grove League wrestling title Thursday by beating Rancho Alamitos, 51-16, at Santiago.
Santiago’s Jimmy Ruvalcaba, who is ranked fourth in the county with a 35-0 record, pinned Rancho Alamitos’s Ben Dong at 125 pounds in 2 minutes 51 seconds. Carlos Garcia also got a fall for the Cavaliers (30-1, 6-0), pinning Eric Bucio in 1:34 in their 152-pound match.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 56, Cypress 18--Matt Ironroad pinned Cypress’ Dave Festa in 38 seconds at 215 pounds to lead El Dorado (4-0). The Golden Hawks’ T.J. Ash scored a technical fall over Sean Patterson at 160 pounds.
Katella 48, Century 24--Bruno Martinez of Katella pinned David Figueroa in 2:35. Adan Tapia of Katella (11-8, 2-2) surprised Adam Esparza, pinning Century’s 112-pounder in 3:29.
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 45, Brea Olinda 20--Mike Slach won by fall in 22 seconds to lead Anaheim (28-3, 4-0). Teammates Edgar Saldivar and Robert Droughns also had pins for the fourth-ranked Colonists.
Valencia 57, Western 21--At 145 pounds, Valencia sophomore Armando Rodriguez pinned Jeremy Thompson in 3:47 to clinch the victory for the visiting Tigers (5-5, 2-2).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 45, Aliso Niguel 18--The Hawks won their third consecutive league championship.
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 40, Woodbridge 26--Brian Clark won by fall in 2:51 at 103 pounds to lead El Toro (4-1).
Santa Margarita 65, Newport Harbor 14--Santa Margarita’s Pat Staight (145) was down, 2-0, after the first period, but came back to pin his opponent in 2:31. Teammate Curtis Wright (189) had a pin in 33 seconds for the Eagles (6-7, 3-2).
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 45, Dana Hills 31--Mission Viejo’s Sam Han, who’s ranked fourth in the county at 135, pinned Ryan Wesselink in 1:52 in a 145 pound match. Jeff Tibbitts (189) pinned Joe Vineyard in 1:28 for 10th-ranked Mission Viejo (2-2 in league).
San Clemente 55, Trabuco Hills 21--Paul Virgin (103) pinned Ricky Poon in 1:03 and Robert Richardson (275) pinned Mike Switzer in 3:05 for ninth-ranked San Clemente (13-6-1, 3-1).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 54, Los Alamitos 15--Matt Steinmeyer, ranked third in the county, won his 171 pound match and teammate Zack Jackson won at 135 pounds with a pin for third-ranked Esperanza (19-2, 3-0).
Fountain Valley 42, Edison 21--Fountain Valley’s Brian Masumoto avenged his loss to John Yeh last weekend at the San Clemente tournament by defeating Yeh in a 112-pound match, 5-4. Brent Morita of Fountain Valley (24-0, 4-0) won by a technical fall over Chris Pitt (135).
