World IN BRIEF : MEXICO : ‘Officer of the Year’ Held in Drug Bust
Jose Armando Cruz Gutierrez, who won a car two months ago after being voted “Policeman of the Year” in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking after allegedly being detained with 436 pounds of marijuana. The attorney general’s office confirmed Cruz’s arrest, adding in a statement that three other officers were detained with him, including Chihuahua’s commander of detectives, Gerardo Maximiliano Coronel, and his wife. Meanwhile in Washington, Republican Sen. Alfonse D’Amato of New York and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California accused Mexico of being a haven for drug cartels and introduced legislation to block further U.S. government loans to Mexico if it fails to do more to curb trafficking into the United States. The Clinton administration criticized the bill.
