Kennedy Upsets El Dorado With Second-Half Goal

After a scoreless first half, fullback Lisa Marina scored late in the second half as Kennedy upset El Dorado, 1-0, in Empire League girls’ soccer Tuesday.

Jihan Elgazzar had four saves for Kennedy (12-4-3, 5-2), which took sole possession of first place.

El Dorado, which is ranked eighth in the Southern Section Division III rankings, dropped to 4-1-2 in league.

In other league games:

Cypress 3, Katella 0--Laura Woiemberghe and Cameron Norum scored in the first half and Annie McClure added the third goal for Cypress (12-4-2, 5-0-2) in the second half.

In the Century League:

Canyon 8, Santa Ana Valley 0--Amber Glende scored two goals and Michelle Bannister had a goal and two assists for Canyon (10-5-2, 5-1-1), ranked fifth in Division II.

El Modena 4, Foothill 0--Nicole Terry had two goals and an assist for host El Modena (15-5-2, 6-1), which posted its 10th shutout. Foothill is 11-8-1, 4-2-1.

Villa Park 1, Orange 0--Amy Anderson scored 25 minutes into game for Villa Park (8-9-4, 3-2-2). Kirby Coleman recorded the assist for the Spartans.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 1, Sunny Hills 0--Lauren Azuela scored the winning goal 21 minutes into the game off an assist from Diana Flacks, posting La Habra’s ninth shutout of the season, fifth in league. The Highlanders are second in league at 12-7-1, 5-1-1.

Sonora 3, Fullerton 0--Senior Sarah Barnum scored late in the first half, and Jenny Treadway and freshman Angela Jenkins scored early in the second for host Sonora (11-5-1, 4-2-1).

Troy 6, Buena Park 0--Ginny Everett and Erin Christensen each scored two goals for visiting Troy (12-1-1, 6-1), which led, 5-0, at halftime.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 6, Tustin 0--Senior Krista Gaeta scored three goals, her second hat trick in a row, for the Seahawks (7-8-3, 6-0-1).

Rosary 5, Santa Ana 0--Elizabeth Ramirez had two goals and an assist and Rebecca Millea scored two goals for Rosary (7-6-3, 4-0-3), which took over second place in league, dropping Santa Ana (10-7-3, 3-3-1) into third.

Westminster 2, Saddleback 0--Kelly Hauxhurster scored both of the goals in the second half for Westminster (6-8-3, 3-4). Betsy Tuggle had 11 saves for the Lions.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 3, Costa Mesa 0--Cindy Johnson, Jenny Speirs and Jana Mellotti scored goals for host Aliso Niguel (11-5-3, 4-1-2).

Laguna Hills 2, Estancia 1--Karine Inoue scored two goals to lead the Hawks (16-2-3, 6-0-1). Beth Ferryman had 24 saves, 13 in the first 30 minutes, to keep the Eagles (3-8-2, 2-4-1) in the game.

University 1, Laguna Beach 0--Kaley Pickett scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute and goalkeeper Jill Krupoff had five saves to post her eighth shutout for visiting University (10-8, 5-2).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 2, Fountain Valley 0--Loree Tamanaha and Jennifer Mercurio each scored first-half goals, giving Edison (13-5-5, 3-2-2) the upset over Fountain Valley (12-4-4, 2-3-2), ranked ninth in the county and in Division I.

Los Alamitos 2, Esperanza 0--Brittany Savelkoul and Niki Szlak scored for visiting Los Alamitos (11-4-4, 5-2). Esperanza is 10-5-3, 3-3-1.

Marina 5, Huntington Beach 3 (OT)--Megan Orach scored in the 70th minute to make it, 3-3, to send the game into overtime and Jenny Benson scored twice in overtime for Marina (12-5-2, 4-1-2), ranked fourth in the county.
