TRW Aircraft Program Scrapped: The Hunter unmanned surveillance aircraft, produced by TRW Inc. and Israel Aircraft Industries Inc., has been canceled, the Pentagon said. Paul Kaminski, undersecretary of defense for acquisition and technology, said the Defense Department “will make no further purchases of the Hunter Joint Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.” The entire Hunter program, including development and production, was expected to cost $4 billion. The Pentagon will end up spending about $667 million. TRW’s Avionics and Surveillance unit in San Diego makes the Hunter. Spokesman Bob Such said the decision will have no effect on the unit’s work force. Separately, the Pentagon has agreed to let McDonnell Douglas Corp. speed up the production schedule for the C-17 transport plane, a move designed to save money and create more jobs.
